1st November was a cold, wet and windy day as society members gathered at Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh. The Kirk’s guide gave an excellent talk on the history of the building with particular emphasis on the signing of the Covenant on 28th February 1638. The first Marquis was one of the signatories that day.
Afterwards, one of the ‘Friends of Greyfriars’ took the group on a tour of the Kirkyard where many interesting and well known characters are buried.
Lunch was served at The Royal Scots Club and was followed by an excellent illustrated lecture, entitled “Montrose, Argyll and the 1637 Supplications Campaign”, delivered by Professor Karin Bowie, Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Glasgow.
