About the Society
The 1st Marquis of Montrose Society was founded by Alan Macpherson, Younger of Cluny in June 1996.
Alan can call himself nothing less than a Montrose addict! Once he had put himself to the task of learning everything there was to know about the marquis’ life and times, he decided to found this organisation so that he might preserve and further Montrose’s memory, while also advocating for wider recognition of all that he gave both to his king and to Scotland, and all he lost in the process.
The Constitution of the Society is a document of intent and a demonstration of feeling about the subject. Our aims and objectives are primarily concerned with having all sites of importance to Montrose’s life and campaigns properly recognised and, where possible, preserved. It binds all members to uphold and honour the memory of Montrose, which includes “spreading the word” wherever possible. Montrose’s memory must be revived and placed in the annals of Scottish history where it belongs, alongside the other great figures of this country’s past. In pursuit of these goals, the society is committed to promoting historical research and discourse on this period and making it open and accessible to our membership and the general public. The society is also constantly engaged in preservation and public engagement activities, which has seen us work alongside a plethora of national and local partners.
If you share these interests and desire to promote the memory of the marquis to help shake off the dust of time which has wrongly been allowed to gather upon this period, you would be warmly welcome to join the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society. We are proud of our international membership, which currently includes individuals from across the UK, Europe, North America and Australia. For more information on membership (including the various benefits), please follow the link to the ‘Join’ page.
The society is a fully transparent and egalitarian organisation, which is overseen by a council of members who are elected annually at our AGM, held in Edinburgh. The current office bearers on the council are:
- Chairman | Robin Bell
- Vice Chairman | Jo Woolley
- Treasurer and Membership Secretary | James Hair
