Members of the society based themselves in Elgin to enjoy the annual field trip, this year visiting the battle sites of Auldearn (9th May 1645) and Alford (2nd July 1645).
On this occasion, the group was led by long-standing society member Brian Robertson, whose outstanding knowledge ensured the group was given an excellent description of both battles. In Auldearn, members met at the Boath Doocot, overlooking the site and again at what is known as ‘Montrose’s Hollow’, sadly now a modern housing estate. Lunch was served in the appropriately named 1645 Inn, where society member Ian Robertson gave an interesting talk on the Grahams of Orchil.
In addition, the group gathered in Bellie Churchyard, near Fochabers, where in 2011 the society erected a memorial to Lord John Graham, the Marquis’ 14 year old son, died at Bog of Gight Castle in early March 1645.
The young Lord John Graham accompanied his father throughout the campaign. It is thought that the harsh conditions he had to endure could have contributed to his death, but there was also the possibility he died from typhus which was rife at the time.
Dinner on Saturday evening was enjoyed in an Elgin restaurant.
On Sunday morning, three enthusiasts from the Alford & District History Group joined members and, along with Brian, gave an excellent interpretation of the Battle of Alford, from both the low and high ground positions.
