Society members and friends are invited to join us on Saturday 1st November for our Autumn Event. The format for the day is as follows.

11.00

  • Meet at Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars Place, Edinburgh, EH1 2QQ
  • Situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, Greyfriars Kirk was founded in 1620.  We will be given a tour of the Kirk with particular emphasis made on the signing of the National Covenant on 28th February 1638 by Scottish Nobles, including the 1st Marquis of Montrose.  There will also be an opportunity to look around the Kirkyard where the Covenanter’s Prison is located.  This is a locked section of the Kirkyard which is associated with the infamous ghost of an Edinburgh lawyer known for his ruthless persecution of Covenanters.   In addition to the famous ‘Greyfriars Bobby’, many notable individuals such as architect William Adam, geologist James Hutton, poet Allan Ramsay and Captain Porteous of the Edinburgh Riots are buried.

13.00

  • A soup and sandwich lunch will be served in the Ellesmere Room at the Royal Scots Club, 29-31 Abercromby Place, Edinburgh, EH3 6QE

14.00

  • We are privileged to have Karin Bowie, Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Glasgow, as our guest speaker for the afternoon.  Professor Bowie will focus on the political lead up to the signing of the National Covenant.
