On Saturday 12 September, the society gathered for our annual autumn event at Glasgow Cathedral. We were fortunate enough to have the benefit of the knowledge and expertise of the excellent cathedral guides, who took us on an immensely enjoyable tour of the cathedral. Afterwards members paid a visit to the St. Mungo’s museum of Religious Life and Art and the Provand’s Lordship, Glasgow’s oldest surviving house, before retiring to the Drygate Brewery for lunch. It was a gratifying experience to be in a city with such significance to the life of Montrose from his attendance at the city’s university as a young man, to the General Assembly of 1638, and the Royalist parliament that never was, which he had called to meet in the city in 1645 following his victory at the Battle of Kilsyth.
The society was also delighted to be joined by His Grace the Duke of Montrose, our patron and honorary President, along with his son and heir Jamie, Marquis of Graham, his brother Lord Ronnie, and Ronnie’s son Douglas. During lunch society Chairman Robin Bell offered Jamie and Ronnie honorary membership of the society which they both accepted.
